Agate Married Student Housing

University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon

On this project our firms' principal Kyriakos Pontikis worked with Christopher Alexander, CES, and other students as part of a graduate design studio. The project consisted of four building complexes, each having five apartments. All four complexes were placed around a communal open space. The building construction system consisted of concrete block base wall and timber frame structure.

Saint Andrew's Christian Church

Olathe, Kansas

The principal of our firm, Kyriakos Pontikis, designed this complex of buildings with Gary Black and Cullen Burda. The project included the sanctuary, offices, and classrooms. The complex of buildings is well integrated with the site, the exterior open spaces, trellises, gardens, and concealed parking. The sanctuary structure is a series of exposed concrete lattice frame trusses spanning sixty feet. The entry hearth room is a prototypical construction system utilizing straw bales and gunnite. The trusses and straw bales were masterfully engineered by Gary Black.

Nicosia Housing Project

Nicosia, Cyprus

This low cost housing project, consisting of 15 detached houses and  8 apartment buildings with 35 dwellings, was designed for a local developer. The fundamental structure of the project consisted of the detached houses facing the curved edge of the site, the L-shape buildings anchoring the corner sites, and the rectangular buildings placed as infill structures. Coherent building and street layout, low density, small size buildings, tree lined streets, open spaces, and small hidden parking courts were some of the patterns used for this project. Local building construction patterns, materials, and detailing were also proposed for the project.

Intercollege Student Hostel

Nicosia, Cyprus

In our view Intercollege student hostel is a community project because of its function, size, and impact on the local neighborhood. It is about 154,000 s.f. and it includes 420 student rooms and communal spaces such as entrance lobby, restaurant, cafeteria, and library. The allocated construction budget was around $ 6,000,000. The client wanted a neoclassical facade and we worked with him to provide a building facade that respected classical tradition. The proposed building construction system consisted of cast in place reinforced concrete with in-fill terracotta block walls, plaster, stucco, and local stone veneer.
